The Process

How It Works

Magnetic Particle testing (MT) identifies surface and slightly subsurface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials. The part is magnetised and fine ferromagnetic particles are applied to the surface; where a discontinuity exists, the magnetic field leaks and attracts the particles, forming a visible indication of the flaw.

Applicable Techniques

Types and Variants

Wet Fluorescent

Particles suspended in liquid, interpreted under ultraviolet light. Offers higher sensitivity for fine discontinuities.

Dry Method

Powder particles applied dry, suited to field inspection of rough surfaces or at high temperatures.

Yoke (Electromagnet) Magnetisation

Portable contact equipment, widely used for field weld inspection.

Coil Magnetisation

Suited to detecting longitudinal discontinuities in cylindrical and tubular components.
