The Process

How It Works

Ultrasonic testing (UT) uses high-frequency sound waves to detect internal discontinuities (inclusions, lack of fusion, porosity and cracks) not visible to surface methods. It is one of the few NDT methods able to assess the thickness and volumetric integrity of a material, with different techniques depending on geometry complexity and project requirements.

Applicable Techniques

Types and Variants

Conventional (Pulse-Echo)

Traditional manual scanning with a single transducer, the reference for weld and plate inspection.

Phased Array (PAUT)

Multiple piezoelectric elements allow electronic scanning and sectorial imaging, with higher resolution and digital recording.

TOFD (Time of Flight Diffraction)

High-precision technique for sizing discontinuities, widely used on critical welded joints.

Immersion

Part and transducer immersed in a coupling-liquid tank, suited to automated inspection of complex components.
